After the balance changes Druid is represented in the top tier 4 out of 7 times, in the middle tier 3 out of 7 times and was never bad. In the middle tier Druid was represented 6 out of 19 times. Prior to the change, Druid was represented in the top category 10 out of 19 times. This kind of data allows us to ask if these changes had any meaningful impact. They removed some problematic mechanics, but Druid more than any other class received significant changes. Classes that are bad most often trade places with middle tier classes, hardly ever do we see a meta where Druid, Warlock and Warrior are all bad.Īpril 24th 2016 Blizzard announced that they where making significant changes to the core set which would be evergreen in standard. Paladin and Priest are nearly always bad. We get the following:ĭruid, Warrior, and Warlock are nearly always playable. If we define ‘playable’ to mean a class is in the top or middle tiers and ‘unplayable’ to mean a class is ‘bad’. The reason they are not an exact inverse is due to the ‘middle tier’ catagory: Not surprisingly, ‘bad’ classes are a near inverse: For example, what classes are the best and how often? blizzard’s server logs), but sadly we only have access to summarized data.Ĭompiling data in this way is labor intensive to be sure, but it allows you to ask interesting questions. When doing an analysis like this, we will get more consistent results if the source of data was consistent over time (e.g. taking two many data points from one distribution (the months of dominance of shaman for nearly all of 2016) while ignoring others that lack data (the very powerful and brief freeze-giants mage 2013). I did not choose to sample each and every meta snapshot, this would result in over-sampling, i.e. Mean Streets of Gadgetzan(December 2016) – Whispers of the Old Gods (April 26th, 2016) The League of Explorers (November 2015) – The best expansion *picking a snapshot far enough after release to see secret hearthstone/meta-snapshot/legacy/meta-snapshot-28-oh-secret-tree-oh-secret-tree The Grand Tournament (August 2015) – Oh Xmas tree, how we hate () – Undertaker Nerf Rise of Mechīlackrock Mountain (April 2015) – Rise of Grim Patron Warrior Hunter Mage Paladin Drui d Priest *note I try to get a good snapshot at around the time, but it () Reynad creates Zoo, Feb 28 2014,Ĭurse of Naxxramas (July 2014) – Undertaker Hunters are 9/dodds-rogues-to-be-toned-down-priests-warriors-to-be-buffed/ The results are shown in the table below: Meta Timepoint In cases where the metasnapshot was not yet established, I extracted the data from alternative websites that where available at the time. Whenever possible, I took the top decks from Tempo Storm’s meta snapshot. By looking at the history of the meta in response to the Blizzard interventions, we can determine if the game is becoming more interesting (more strategies in the meta) or more stale (a single dominant deck). Historically, Blizzard has changed the meta via card releases and nerfs. I believe that the best way to control the overall ‘fun’ or enjoyment of the game is to change the meta.
